Plan-managed, self-managed or agency-managed: what changes for you

How a plan is managed changes who handles the paperwork and which providers you can work with. It does not change what supports you are funded for.

Agency-managed

The National Disability Insurance Agency handles payments directly. Providers claim from the portal, so there is very little admin at your end. The trade-off is that you can only use providers who are NDIS-registered.

Plan-managed

A plan manager sits between you and the providers. They receive the invoices, pay them from your plan funding, and keep the records. You get the wider choice of a self-managed plan without the bookkeeping, and plan management funding is separate from your support budgets.

Self-managed

You receive the funding and pay providers yourself, keeping records for reporting. It offers the most flexibility in who you engage and how arrangements are structured, and it carries the most administrative responsibility.

What it means when arranging support

The practical question to ask a provider is simply whether they work with your management type. Beyond that, the management arrangement should not shape the support itself. If a provider is steering you toward a particular arrangement for their own convenience rather than yours, that is worth noticing.

For anything specific to your own plan, your plan manager or support coordinator is the right person to ask.
